About Pailin

Pailin Wedel is a freelance multimedia journalist and trainer based in Bangkok, Thailand. Her clients include the Washington Post, Global Post, AsiaWorks, the Bangkok Post and WAN_IFRA. Prior to Bangkok she was a staff photographer and multimedia journalist at the News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina for 3 years. She was a contributor to the newspaper's photo column "Acts of Faith," which focuses on striking expressions of religion observance.

Pailin has covered a variety of events including the 2004 Asian tsunami, the U.S. Women's Golf Open, Fashion Week in New York, the presidential primaries and the anti-government group airport takeover in Bangkok.

Before joining the News & Observer, Pailin spent a summer with the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Fla., as a Visual Summer Fellow. She has worked on online documentary projects in Chile and Ecuador through funding from the Morehead Foundation and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The projects have won several awards, including a 2005 Gold Medal from the Society for News Design and first place for multimedia from the National Press Photographers Association's Best of Photojournalism competition in 2005. She has also received awards from the North Carolina Press Association for her still photography.

Pailin has been invited to "coach" multimedia university students. She was a multimedia coach for specialolympicslive.org, a multimedia Web site with live coverage at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, she was a coach for andamanrising.org in Khao Lak, Thailand and most recently a coach for a site about the Galapagos Islands, livinggalapagos.org. The Khao Lak project just won several awards for 2009 contests including the Online Journalism Awards for student journalism, the silver for Society for News Design's SNDies, the Gold Medal from the Horizon Interactive awards and first place from the AEJMC Best of the Web.

Pailin has lived in five countries and speaks fluent English, Thai, and Spanish as well as conversational Mandarin. Pailin graduated from the University of North Carolina with a B.A in Biology and a minor in photojournalism.
